Pure Gel vs. Hybrid Polish: Why "Premium" Gels Cost More (And Why They're Worth It)
Walk into any beauty supply store, and you will see rows of identical black bottles. They all claim to be "Gel Polish." They all cure in a lamp. They all look shiny.
But there is a massive difference inside those bottles.
In the professional nail world, there are two distinct categories of product: Hybrid Polish and 100% Pure Gel.
Most budget brands (and many famous salon brands) are Hybrids. But brands like Luxio and Akzentz—the ones we specialize in at Nashly Nails—are Pure Gels.
So, what is the difference? And why does Pure Gel often cost twice as much? The answer lies in the chemistry, the solvents, and the health of your natural nails.

1. What is a "Hybrid" Polish?
Think of Hybrid Polish as a cocktail. It is a mix of Gel (oligomers) and standard Nail Polish (solvents).
-
The Smell: Open a bottle of hybrid polish. Does it smell strong? Like chemicals or nail polish remover? That is the smell of Solvents (like butyl acetate or ethyl acetate).
-
How It Works: The solvents dilute the gel to make it thin and easy to paint. When you apply it, those solvents evaporate into the air, leaving the gel behind to cure.
The Problem with Hybrids
-
Dehydration: Solvents are drying agents. As they sit on your nail and evaporate, they pull moisture out of your natural nail plate. Over time, this leads to white spots (granulation) and brittle nails.
-
Shrinkage: Have you ever painted a perfect line near your cuticle, only to look back 10 seconds later and see that the polish has pulled back? That is evaporation. As the solvent leaves, the product shrinks.
-
Wrinkling: Because hybrids contain less actual gel, if you paint them too thick, the light can't penetrate, leading to a wrinkled, uncured mess.
2. What is "100% Pure Gel"?
Pure Gel (like Luxio) is exactly what it sounds like. It is 100% active ingredients. There are no solvents, no thinners, and no "filler" liquids.
-
The Smell: Open a bottle of Luxio. Take a sniff. It has almost no scent. That is because there are no volatile solvents evaporating from the bottle.
-
How It Works: Whatever you paint on the nail stays on the nail. Nothing evaporates.
The Benefits of Pure Gel
-
Stability (No Shrinking): Where you put the brush is where the gel stays. It does not pull back from the edges or shrink in the lamp. This makes it much easier to get that perfect "Photoshop" cuticle line.
-
Pigmentation: Because the bottle isn't half-full of clear solvents, the pigment is more concentrated. You get richer, creamier coverage in fewer coats.
-
Hydration: Pure gel does not dry out the natural nail. It acts as a protective shield. Many clients find their natural nails grow longer and stronger under pure gel because they aren't being constantly dehydrated.
The "Bottle Test": How to Tell the Difference
Not sure what is sitting in your drawer? Try these two simple tests.
The Smell Test
-
Sharp, chemical odor? It’s a Hybrid (contains solvents).
-
Odorless or faint earthy scent? It’s likely a Pure Gel.
The Shake Test
-
Hybrid: You usually have to shake the bottle vigorously (or it has a metal ball inside) because the heavy pigment separates from the thin solvents.
-
Pure Gel: Pure gels (like Luxio) are thicker and more stable. They rarely separate. You can usually just roll the bottle gently and paint.

Why We Choose Akzentz & Luxio
At Nashly Nails, we are picky. We choose to stock Akzentz (the parent company of Luxio) because they manufacture their own polymers in Canada. They don't buy generic "mystery gel" and slap a label on it.
-
Luxio: Their flagship 100% Pure Gel line. Creamy, self-leveling, and solvent-free.
-
Options: Their soak-off potted gel line (perfect for art).
-
Trinity: Their hard gel system for extensions.
When you buy a bottle of Pure Gel, you aren't paying for evaporating chemicals. You are paying for a bottle full of product that protects your nails rather than drying them out.
