The Emergency Fix: How to Repair a Broken Nail (Without Cutting Them All Down)

by Anastasia Julia

It happens in slow motion. You reach for a door handle, your hand slips, and CRACK.

You look down to see a jagged tear halfway down your nail bed.

For most people, this is a tragedy. It means getting out the clippers and chopping all ten beautiful, long nails down to "nubs" just so they match.

But you are not most people. You have professional tools.

At Nashly Nails, we believe a broken nail is just a minor construction project. Whether it’s a hairline crack or a missing corner, here is how to perform emergency surgery and save your set.

Assess the Damage: Is it Safe to Fix?

Before you grab your glue, you need to check the severity.

  • The Safe Zone: A crack in the free edge (the white part) or a crack on the nail bed that is not bleeding.

  • The Danger Zone: If the break is deep, bleeding, or the nail bed is exposed and raw, do not put gel on it. You risk trapping bacteria in the wound. Cut it short, keep it clean with a bandage, and let it heal first.

Assuming it’s just a tragic crack, here are the two best methods to fix it.

The "Band-Aid" (Silk Wraps or Fiberglass)

This is best for Side-Wall Cracks—those annoying tears that start at the side of your nail and try to rip across the middle.

The Concept: You are essentially creating a cast. By embedding a piece of fabric (Silk or Fiberglass) into the gel, you create a reinforced layer that holds the two pieces of nail together.

What You Need:

The Steps:

  1. Prep: Gently buff the surface of the nail to remove shine. Wipe with alcohol.

  2. Cut the Silk: Cut a small piece of silk wrap slightly larger than the crack.

  3. The Base: Apply a thin layer of Builder Gel over the crack. Do not cure yet.

  4. The Placement: Lay the piece of silk into the wet gel. Use tweezers to pat it down flat so it becomes transparent (soaked in gel).

  5. Cure: Cure for 60 seconds.

  6. Structure: Apply a second layer of Builder Gel over the entire nail to bury the silk completely. Build your apex as usual. What is a Structured Gel Manicure?

  7. Finish: Cure, wipe, and buff smooth. You will never know the crack was there.

The "Corner Rebuild" (Using a Form)

This is best for Chipped Corners—when a chunk of your nail has snapped off, leaving you with a jagged, uneven shape.

The Concept: You are going to use a paper form to create a "scaffold" and fill in the missing puzzle piece with hard gel.

What You Need:

The Steps:

  1. Prep: File the jagged edge slightly so it’s clean, not ragged. Remove shine from the rest of the nail.

  2. Fit the Form: Slide the paper form under your nail. It needs to sit snugly against the broken corner.

    • Tip: If there is a gap between the form and your nail, the gel will leak underneath. Pinch the form tight!

  3. The Bridge: Take a bead of Builder Gel. Place it on the form where the missing nail should be. Connect it to your natural nail.

  4. Flash Cure: Cure for 10-15 seconds immediately to freeze the shape.

  5. Build Strength: Apply a full layer of builder gel over the entire nail (natural part + the new extension) to fuse them together. Cure fully.

  6. Shape: Remove the form. Use your hand file to shape the new gel corner to match your other nails.

Prevention: Why Did It Break?

Nails usually break for a reason. If you find yourself doing repairs constantly, check these three things:

  1. The Apex was moved: If your nails grew out too long without a fill, the stress point became weak Learn Mastering the Fill

  2. The Product is too thin: Long nails need a thicker layer of builder gel to absorb shock.

  3. The Shape: Square nails have sharp corners that catch on things. Switching to Almond or Oval might reduce breakage.

Don't Cut Them Down!

Keep a pack of silk wraps and a roll of forms in your kit. They are the cheapest insurance policy for your manicure.
