The Smooth Finish: How to Encapsulate Glitter (So It Doesn't Feel Like Sandpaper)
We all love the look of chunky, holographic glitter. It catches the light like a disco ball.
But we all hate the feel of it.
If you have ever done a glitter manicure that felt like 80-grit sandpaper, or had a sharp piece of sequin snag your hair every time you touched it, you know the struggle.
The secret to smooth, glass-like glitter nails isn't more top coat. It's Encapsulation.
At Nashly Nails, we believe your nails should feel as smooth as they look. Here is the professional technique for burying that sparkle deep inside the nail so it never snags again.
The "Aquarium" Effect
Think of encapsulation like putting an object inside a paperweight.
-
The Base: You lay the glitter down flat.
-
The Glass: You pour a thick layer of clear gel over it.
-
The Surface: You file the clear gel smooth, leaving the glitter untouched underneath.
If you rely on just Top Coat to cover chunky glitter, it will never work. Top coat is too thin. You need Structure Gel.
What You Need
-
Clear Builder Gel (or Hard Gel)
-
180 Grit Hand File or Buffer
Glass Glitter in 4 Steps
The "Sticky" Layer
-
Apply your base color (or clear base) and cure.
-
Apply a thin, wet layer of Base Gel or Builder Gel where you want the glitter to go. Do not cure yet.
-
Why? This acts as the glue to hold the heavy pieces in place.
The Placement (Flat is Key)
-
Pick up your glitter using an old brush or a dotting tool and press it into the wet gel.
-
The Golden Rule: Pat it down!
-
If a piece of hexagon glitter is sticking up sideways, it will poke through later. Use your finger (in a glove) or a plastic sheet to pat all the glitter pieces flat against the curve of the nail.
-
Cure to lock them in place.
The Encapsulation (The "Pour")
-
This is the most important step. Take a bead of Clear Builder Gel.
-
Float the gel over the glitter. You are trying to "bury" the texture completely.
-
You need enough gel so that the surface looks smooth and the glitter is essentially underwater.
-
Cure fully (60 seconds).
The Smooth-Out (File It Down)
-
When the nail comes out of the lamp, it might look a little bulky or uneven.
-
Wipe the sticky layer off with alcohol.
-
Take your 180 Grit File or Buffer and file the entire surface of the nail.
-
Don't panic: The nail will look scratched and cloudy. This is normal! You are filing the clear gel into a perfect shape. Because you buried the glitter deep, you won't file the sparkles off.
-
Keep filing until the surface feels perfectly smooth to the touch with no bumps.
The Reveal
-
Clean the dust away with alcohol.
-
Apply your [No-Wipe Top Coat].
-
Watch the magic. As soon as the top coat hits the scratched surface, it turns crystal clear again, and your glitter looks like it is floating inside glass.
Why Is It Still Bumpy?
Problem: "I filed it smooth, but now the glitter is silver/scratched."
-
Cause: You didn't put enough clear gel on top (Step 3). When you filed the surface, you filed right into the glitter pieces and scraped the color off.
-
Fix: Use a thicker layer of Builder Gel next time. You need a "safety margin" of clear gel between the file and the glitter.
Problem: "The nail looks huge and bulky."
-
Cause: You put the glitter too close to the cuticle or sidewalls.
-
Fix: Keep chunky glitter in the center of the nail. Fade it out to fine dust near the edges. This keeps the nail looking slim, even with the extra layer of clear gel.
